Expansion in Unity
UNITY — A groundbreaking ceremony was held on June 29 to begin the expansion of the New Horizons Health Care primary care practice in Unity, a division of Inland Hospital.
The building that houses the medical practice on Main Street in Unity will be named the Bert and Coral Clifford Health Center.
The naming of the center is a condition of a grant from the Unity Foundation to honor its founders Bert and Coral Clifford.
The Unity Foundation has donated the land and medical office building to Inland so that a major addition can be made. The Unity Foundation grant to Inland Hospital is valued in excess of $400,000.
The expansion will more than double the space in the practice, adding 3,800 square feet and new patient exam rooms to accommodate the growing health care needs of the community.
The addition will be “green” and Inland plans to apply for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification. The construction is expected to be complete by early 2010.
“We are very grateful to the Cliffords and the Unity Foundation for supporting the future of health care in Unity,” said John Dalton, president and CEO of Inland Hospital.
According to Dr. Gavin Ducker, the medical director at the Unity New Horizons Health Care practice, “The expansion will allow us to serve more people in the community. We will be proud to have our practice associated with Bert and Coral Clifford, two of Unity’s greatest benefactors.”
“Bert and Coral have been long time supporters of the town of Unity and the key infrastructure that makes the community thrive,” said Larry Sterrs, board chairman and CEO of the Unity Foundation. “On behalf of the board and staff of the Unity Foundation, we are pleased to make this gift and continue the work of Bert and Coral Clifford.”
The Cliffords were long-time residents of Unity before Bert Clifford died in August 2001. His widow, Coral, now resides in Florida.

Rotary Club grant
BANGOR — The Acadia Hospital was one of four area nonprofit organizations to be awarded a grant from the Rotary Club of Bangor. Each organization had an opportunity to describe the program being supported by Rotary and receive their check at the Rotary Club’s weekly meeting.
Acadia Hospital received $2,000 to help fund a series of Challenge Days to be held at four Maine high schools in the fall.
Searsport District High School, Hermon High School, Biddeford High School and Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham are scheduled for one or more Challenge Days. The Rotary grant will help Acadia Hospital, which coordinates Challenge Days, offset the cost of travel and lodging for Challenge Day facilitators.
“Acadia is very pleased to receive financial support from the Rotary Club of Bangor,” said Acadia Hospital President and CEO David S. Proffitt. “We share Rotary’s passion for working with youth and the funding will go a long way in helping us bring Challenge Day to more than 300 Maine high school students next fall.”
The hospital has been coordinating Challenge Days as part of its Community Conversations program in support of youth wellness and violence prevention for more than 10 years. Acadia and the participating schools are recognized by Challenge Day as the Pine Tree Circle of Change, one of the only Circles in New England.
Susan Jonason, president of Rotary Club of Bangor, said, “Our club is delighted to be supporting this important program for high school students. We are proud of Acadia Hospital for its ongoing commitment to Challenge Day and look forward to hearing about this year’s success.”
